India has made significant strides in bolstering its domestic defense manufacturing capabilities. Historically reliant on imports for about 65-70% of its defense needs, the nation now produces approximately 65% of its defense equipment domestically. This transformation reflects the resilience and growth of India’s defense manufacturing sector, driven by 16 Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), over 430 licensed private companies, and nearly 16,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.
A notable example of this progress is the contribution of Bihar’s Hajipur-based Competence Exports. Established in 2018, this private company has emerged as a significant player in global footwear manufacturing. It has supplied 1.5 million pairs of specialized military boots, valued at ₹100 crore, to the Russian army. The facility employs around 300 workers, with 70% being women, and plans to increase production by 50% in the coming year.
These developments underscore India’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in defense production, aligning with the broader goal of ‘Atmanirbharta’ (self-reliance), and highlight the growing global recognition of Indian-manufactured defense equipment.
